“María’s family are happy” is given as the translation to “La familia de María está contenta”. 

This didn’t sound right to me so I googled and found this- https://style.mla.org/verbs-with-collective-nouns/

The reference would suggest that the translation should be ”María’s family is happy” as the members of the family are in agreement. 

Any comments would be helpful. Thank you. 

Why not use "te" as the indirect object?

consider: 

(1) she has made many sacrifices for her children

(2) she has made many books for her children

why

in (1) "for" --> por

in (2) "for" --> para

I currently am focusing on Latin American Spanish, specifically Mexican Spanish / Californian. What are the differences in vocabulary?

Just wondering if we can use the preterite tense for questions or if the present perfect tense is the only option.  There are two examples of questions, both using the present perfect tense:  ¿Tú has montado en globo?   ¿Has jugado al golf alguna vez?
