Each time I listen to a read-along done by a professional male voice actor, it sounds as though he/they have tightened their throat muscles to extremes. It sounds very unnatural (as a native English speaker) so, is tension in the throat necessary in order to sound "Spanish"?

Hola Garry
No, not at all necessary. I think it just depends on each person and in this case (this actor) has a specific tone that may sound a bit like what you're describing.
Saludos
