Huir Present Tense Conjugation

I'm still a bit confused about where huís is used. Is it used in specific regions of Spain? In specific social classes in Spain? In specific towns or villages in Spain? In specific contexts in Spain? What other countries or regions outside of Spain use huís as a bisyllabic word? Is it widespread or more-or-less negligible, even though not incorrect? To be specific, living in Toledo Spain, should I aim for one syllable or two syllables, huis or huís? If I am traveling to Chile, should I use huis or huís? Thanks so much !

Hola hermana j.,

Both huis and huís are accepted spellings, reflecting two possible pronunciations: huis as one syllable and huís as two.

This isn't really a question of social class or of particular towns or regions. Both pronunciations are considered valid. In Spain, including Toledo, you may hear either, so there is no need to aim specifically for one over the other.

For Chile, however, you are unlikely to use this form at all in everyday speech: huís/huis is the vosotros form, and vosotros is not normally used in Chile. You would generally use ustedes huyen when addressing more than one person.

I hope this clears things up!

Silvia
