Question about "struggling"

Would "luchar" be an appropriate substitution for "tener dificultades" in this context, or is it a little too over the top?

Luchar would be possible, but it sounds stronger and more emphatic here. For the neutral idea of a student “struggling” with something, tener dificultades is more natural in this context.

You could use luchar if you specifically wanted to emphasise the effort or struggle involved.
