Comments on the Cid, and on others from the same period in history.Thank you Shui, Ana and Inma - well chosen - it is indeed part of an important era in Spanish history. I actually wrote a short essay on that period: http://www.dlmcn.com/AlfonsoSexto.html (for a local publication in Almería, drawing from the book "ALFONSO VI - Señor del Cid, Conquistador de Toledo" by Gonzalo Martínez Díez). It seemed worth highlighting the fact that one of Alfonso VI's wives - Zá'ida - is the only Muslim woman in the whole of history who became a Christian queen; (originally, she was the daughter-in-law of the Muslim Ruler of Seville).
When asked what she thought was "el peor momento de la historia de España", the Madrid historian María Lara Martínez replied:
"La batalla de Uclés contra los almorávides en el año 1108 marcó un "antes y un después". Murió Sancho Alfónsez, y Alfonso VI se quedó sin heredero varón. Sancho Alfónsez era un príncipe de dos sangres, pues su madre era la mora Zá'ida. ¿Qué habría pasado si este adolescente hubiera llegado al trono? ¿En qué medida su muerte truncó el proyecto de convivencia de judíos, cristianos y musulmanes?"
The film starring Charlton Heston and Sophía Loren was very well presented; unlike many modern-day productions it at least made an effort to comply with several facts presented in historical documents.
The relationship between the Cid and his King Alfonso VI was not always smooth: for example the Cid did not contribute to the conquest and occupation of the key fortress at Aledo (near Totana in the Region of Murcia, at that time lying deep within Muslim-held territory; my essay contains photos). And the Cid did not participate in the Battle of Uclés.
One of the questions is: .(fill in)....los regalos ella sopló las velas. One of the correct answers is "Antes de recibir Ana". De complete sentence sounds odd to me, is it correct?
Why is the answer yo encuentro wrong and the correct answer is encuentro without the yo?
Voy a perderme el viaje a Cuba a menos que ________ un milagro. Why is the answer " occura" if it follows an adverbial clause. Shouldn't it be in the subjunctive form?
At " Con la nueva red 5G, podrán acceder a Internet", why is it 'a Internet' and not 'al Internet'?
Also, how do i know when and where to use a passive se sentence Instead of a regular simple future tense as seen here: "los coches automáticos se controlarán" ? I was going to say 'los coches automáticos controlarán' without the se.
The lesson suggests that the use of adónde vs dónde is dependant on whether a verb of movement follows.
However, in a Kwiziq question "Luis me dijo _______ había ido de vacaciones" we are only given the options donde or dónde. But 'ir' seems to suggest adónde (Luis told me to where he went).
So, is it that 'ir' is in past perfect here (and that the movement is finished) that 'adónde' is not a valid option in this case?
Saludos
Hola Inma,
I have a question about present tense opinions of completed past actions. I know the for the English phrase, "I don't think we have done anything wrong to regret", one says, "No creo que hayamos hecho nada malo para arrepentirnos." However, if one changes the English phrase to, "I don't think we had done anything wrong to regret", shouldn't the translation change to, "No creo que hubieramos hecho nada malo para arrepentirnos"? Google does not change el preterito perfecto de subjuntivo to el pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo for this nuance. I think it should. Don't know if this is addressed anywhere else on this site. Can you comment for my benefit?
Saludos,
Wylie
