Pronunciation of the c's in ejercicio

In the word ejercicio: It sounds like the two C's don't have the same sound. I would think they would both be "s" (in Mexico) or "th" (in Spain). But I think I'm hearing a "k" in the second one. Por que?

Hola Ann

I had a listen and to me both "c" sound as "th".

Also in Mexico, ca, co, and cu have a "k" sound while ce and ci have an "s" sound.
