Will this "rule of thumb" work?

I like to think that if neither the speaker nor the listener can SEE what they are talking about, then we use allí.  Would this work?

Unfortunately that is not a safe rule. Using allí does sometimes imply that neither the speaker nor the listener can see what they are talking about, but they could also be talking about something far away that they may just be able to see in the distance.
