Gusta vs Gustan

If gustar is followed by a verb, you always use gusta, right? Example: Me gusta nadar con los delfines. VS Me gustan los delfines. 

Am I understanding that correctly?

Yes Sara,  "Me gusta nadar." (not "Me gustan nadar.")

why is it me gusta viajar translated like i like traving....with ¨ing´?  wouldnt it be I like to travel, I dont understand how it is traveling... i dont see the ando "ending there.
