Camarero o Mesero

What is the difference between Camerero and Mesero? Is it something region specific or anything else?

This question relates to:Spanish lesson "Conjugate irregular verb haber in the simple future in Spanish (El Futuro Simple/Imperfecto)"

camarero and mesero are synonyms. Depending on the region one is used more than the other. I would say that at least in Southern Spain for example you hardly hear the word mesero; camarero is what most people say.

However I think in Latin America the word mesero is more popular, but I don't know which specific Latin American countries use it more.
