Stem-changing Spanish gu>g verbs in the present subjunctive
Spanish verbs that end in -guir change from -gu- to -g- in El Presente de Subjuntivo. For example seguir (to follow/continue):
yo | siga |
tú | sigas |
él / ella / Ud. | siga |
nosotros / nosotras | sigamos |
vosotros / vosotras | sigáis |
ellos / ellas / Uds. | sigan |
Although this group of verbs also undergo a gu > g change in El Presente, the change doesn't apply to all forms in the latter.
Have a look at its conjugation in El Presente to compare:
yo | sigo |
tú | sigues |
él / ella / Ud. | sigue |
nosotros / nosotras | seguimos |
vosotros / vosotras | seguís |
ellos / ellas / Uds. | siguen |
Here, only the yo form is affected by the -gu to -g change.
Other verbs affected by this consonant switch are:
- perseguir (to chase)
- conseguir (to get)
- proseguir (to continue)
