Connectives
Connectives (conectores) are words or groups of words that connect sentences or parts of sentences.
Each connective has a specific function in the sentence. Connectives make texts flow better and give more quality to the text.
Here are the most common connectives, divided into different types, depending on their function:
To order
- En primer lugar..., en último lugar..., después..., luego..., finalmente..., para terminar...
En primer lugar, quería dar gracias a mis compañeros...
(First of all, I would like to thank my colleagues...)
Primero iremos a Grecia, después volaremos a Italia, y finalmente visitaremos Suiza.
(First we will go to Greece, then we will fly to Italy, and finally we will visit Switzerland.)
To introduce a new topic
- En cuanto a..., en lo que se refiere a..., con respecto a...
En cuanto a su sueldo, recibirá un aumento del 5 por ciento.
(As for your salary, you will receive a 5 per cent payrise.)
En lo que se refiere a actividades extraescolares, tenemos baile, música y manualidades.
(In terms of extracurricular activities, we have dance, music and crafts.)
Con respecto a lo que hablamos antes, no tengo más que añadir.
(Regarding what we talked about before, I have nothing else to add.)
To add ideas

También quería comentarle que esta inversión tendrá beneficios a corto plazo.
(Also I want to mention that this investment will be profitable in the short run.)

To clarify or explain

Mis padres estarán fuera todo el fin de semana, o sea, estamos tú y yo solos.
(My parents will be out the whole weekend, I mean, you and I will be on our own.)
Ya no veré más a Luisa; en otras palabras, hemos roto.
(I won't be seeing Luisa any more; in other words, we broke up.)
To give a personal opinion
- En mi opinión.., para mí..., a mi juicio...
En mi opinión, deberías cortarte el pelo.
(In my opinion, you should have a hair cut.)
Para mí, la crueldad hacia los animales no es admisible bajo ninguna circunstancia.
(In my opinion, cruelty towards animals is not acceptable under any circumstances.)
A mi juicio, ese hombre merece una condena larga en la cárcel.
(In my opinion, that man deserves a long sentence in jail.)
To indicate a possibility
- A lo mejor..., quizás..., es posible que...
A lo mejor llamo a Clara esta tarde.
(I may call Clara this afternoon.)
Quizás vayamos a la playa después.
(We may go to the beach later.)
No tengo dinero pero es posible que mis padres me ayuden económicamente.
(I have no money but it is possible that my parents may help me finantially.)
