Why does the title include a reference regarding Imperfecto?

I´m going to guess I´m missing something stupid but why does this lesson title mention Imperfecto? Surely it´s all about Poder in El Futuro Simple, not Imperfecto?

¨Conjugate irregular verb poder in the future tense in Spanish (El Futuro Simple/Imperfecto)¨

Hola Richard A.

That's a good question. In this case, "Imperfecto" is not referring to the Imperfect tense (podía, podías, etc.).

Traditionally, Spanish grammars distinguish between:

  • Futuro simple (also called Futuro imperfecto) → podré, podrás, podrá...
  • Futuro compuesto (also called Futuro perfecto) → habré podido, habrás podido...

So the title "El Futuro Simple/Imperfecto" is giving two names for the same tense. Modern teaching materials more commonly use futuro simple, which is why the reference to imperfecto can seem confusing if you're used to thinking of imperfecto as a separate past tense.

The lesson itself is indeed about the future forms of poder (podré, podrás, podrá, etc.), and the title is using the traditional grammatical terminology.

I hope that clears things up!

Saludos

Silvia
