when do I use " a las" and when do i use "son las" to tell time

Hola John

We use "son las..." when you want to say what the time is:

-¿Qué hora es? 

-Son las diez y media.

-What's the time?

-It's half past ten.

And we use "a las ..." when we say at what time something happens:

Me levanto a las siete.

I get up at seven.
