Hola Gab

In this last sentence from this reader:

"A las cinco de la tarde entra en el bar de Roberto y este mira a Ángela con una sonrisa."

This "este" refers to Roberto, the person that has just been mentioned. It is as if we said: ... en el bar de Roberto, y él mira a Ángela..." -we do this in Spanish sometimes, use este/esta referring to a previous person mentioned with the same function as a pronoun.

I hope this clarified it.

Saludos

Inma

Understood, so "este" is like saying "that one" but why? Surely "él" is easier to write, no?
