can I use retorno instead of vuelvo for "I return"? I took a quiz and it marked it wrong because I did. does it matter which one you use?

vocabulary question
This question relates to:Spanish lesson "Stem-changing verbs in Spanish: -er verbs (o > ue) in the present tense (El Presente)"
Asked 2 weeks ago
Hola zookj m.
The hint specifically asks you to use the verb “volver” because the quiz is testing stem-changing verbs (o → ue) in the present tense.
So the expected answer is “vuelvo”, not retorno, even though retornar also means “to return”. The quiz isn’t checking vocabulary choice here but whether you can correctly apply the stem change in volver.
In normal conversation you can use retornar, but for this particular question the goal was to practise volver.
Hope that helps!
Saludos
Silvia
