My dictionary seems to indicate that actos would be more appropriate here as it translates as 'deeds'. I'm not clear about the difference.

Both acciones and actos are appropriate here. They are synonyms and they both mean "actions, deeds". If you have a look here in the RAE dictionary, you can see how they are synonyms and they refer to the same thing.
