The confusion in understanding these "Nasty" lo, la, los, las, le, les,se

Buenos Dias,

Please, help to understand, once for all, these "nasty" Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns:

Ex: Laura se lo compro = Laura bought it for her. Can also be Laura bought it for  him? How can we make the difference? Also, the English sentence can be translated in Spanis like "Laura se la compro?" Thanks for help, Michael Aldea.

Hola Michael

Yes, the pronouns are a bit difficult sometimes because of the ambiguity. If these sentences are out of context it's impossible to know who they are referring to, so it's necessary to see the previous text or clarify somehow.

Adding the extra pronouns, as Marsha suggested is one way to clarify it: "se lo compró a ella"se lo compró a él".

The same goes for "Laura se la compró"; in this case we'd know that "la" (=it) is referring to something feminine (e.g. una pulsera, a bracelet). If you see "Laura se lo compró", then it's referring to a masculine object (e.g. un reloj, a watch). If you just see the English "Laura bought it for him/her" without knowing what "it" is referring to, both translations would be correct.

Saludos

You can say Laura se lo compro a ella or a él to differentiate.
