My answer was:

fue originado en la región de Río de la Plata.

No entiendo la diferencia. ¿Me podrías explicar?

I don't think we see this verb as used in the passive with ser + participio -it sounds odd in Spanish to say "es originado/fue originado". I see this verb as a pronominal verb using the reflexive pronoun meaning "to start/to be born/ to originate". I imagine seeing the passive form in the English is a bit confusing: "is originated", and makes you think of the passive in Spanish, but not in this case.
