If I am reading this correctly, you're implying that quien and quienes can also apply to things as well as people. Is that really true? It's my understanding that they can only apply to people.

Bear in mind that the most common relative pronoun is "que" and it can refer to both things and people. However this also applies to relative pronoun "quien/quienes".

Quien/quienes can only refer to people, not things. When we say there in the lesson that "this also applies to relative pronoun quien/quienes" we mean the use of the indicative/subjunctive as explained in the lesson, up to that point. So you use indicative with quien for known information and quien with subjunctive for unknown information.
I understand it can be a bit confusing as we are adding the information about que used for things and people.
We'll reword that paragraph t so it's clear.
