Present tense v present progressive

Present tense v present progressive

Hola, I'd like to know if these two tenses are interchangeable eg ella mueve las cajas a otro lugar. Is it equally correct to translate this as either 'she moves the boxes somewhere else' or 'she's moving the boxes somewhere else'?

I realise that other people have asked a similar question but I didn't find the responses very clear so I'm still uncertain. Thank you

Hola Marion y Marcos

I know it's been a while since you asked this question, but I hope you still find this explanation useful!

In Spanish, we can use El Presente (ella mueve las cajas) to talk about both habitual actions and things happening right now.

For example:

Ella mueve las cajas todos los días. = She moves the boxes every day. (A habitual action)
Ella mueve las cajas ahora mismo. = She's moving the boxes right now. (An action happening at the moment)

We can also use Estar + gerundio (ella está moviendo las cajas) when we want to emphasise that an action is in progress.

So, ella mueve las cajas a otro lugar could mean either "she moves the boxes somewhere else" or "she's moving the boxes somewhere else", depending on the context.

The main difference is that English generally requires the present continuous for actions happening right now, whereas Spanish can use either the simple present or the progressive form.

I hope this helps clear things up!

Saludos

Silvia

Both are correct depending on the context.

If you translate to, “She moves the boxes somewhere else.” then you are thinking of a repeated action, for example, if it was part of her job. “Every weekend, she moves the boxes somewhere else.”

If you translate to, “She is moving the boxes somewhere else.” then you are talking about the action in the moment.

Unlike English, the Spanish present tense can refer to either one of these contexts.
