Would the present subjunctive ever be permissible in these constructions or only the imperfect subjunctive?

You may hear it occasionally with the present subjunctive but the most natural sequence would be Conditional + que + Imperfect subjunctive.

In English, too, we seem to find the past tense more natural in this construction, even though we're referring to a future event that may never even happen! E.g. "It would be lovely if your dad walked in right now!" sounds right. But "It would be lovely if your dad walks in right now" sounds oddly wrong.
