present indicative usage

I believe it is possible to translate the following sentence:

¿Terminas tú el trabajo que teníamos para hoy?

as: Do you want to finish the assignment that we had for today?

instead of: Are you finishing the assignment that we had for today?

If so, what is the rationale for that translation?

Hola Gerald

Yes, that'd be an accurate translation for the nuance of this use of the present. If you've seen that sentence in one of our exercises please let us know so we can have a look. I can't see that sentence in the lesson for this topic.

Saludos

No, the source of the question is not in any of the exercises. But, I'd still like to know how one determines to make that particular translation. Is it solely from having to divine the context or is there some kind of rule?
