Position of Pronoun
Hola Kim A.
Here, “usted” is not a pronoun object but an explicit subject, and Spanish allows (and often prefers) the subject to appear after the verb, especially in questions.
Both “¿Tiene usted familia en el pueblo?” and “¿Usted tiene familia en el pueblo?” are grammatically correct. However, placing the subject after the verb is very common and sounds more natural and neutral in questions, particularly in polite or formal contexts. That’s why you often see verb + subject order in Spanish questions.
In this sentence, “usted” is included only for clarity or emphasis, because the verb form tiene already tells us the subject is usted. When the subject is obvious from the verb ending, Spanish frequently places it after the verb or omits it altogether. Saying “¿Tiene familia en el pueblo?” would also be perfectly fine.
So the sentence is not about pronoun placement rules in the sense of object pronouns, but about flexible subject position in Spanish. The version used in the lesson reflects a very natural and common question structure.
Saludos
Silvia
