Hola,

Why is there an 'a' is this sentence? Is suerte considered a 'person' for the personal a to apply or is it an obligatory preposition after tentar?

Tentar a la suerte is always used with the preposition "a". It's not because we consider "suerte" a person", it is because the verb tentar used in this context, as in tempting luck, uses "a", as a set expression. The R.A.E considers the omission of the preposition here as an error. Have a look (see 4.)
