“Nunca hubieras pensado que hubiese tantas formas de disculparse.” Hola, this sentence is from the B2 Listening exercise on how to apologize in spanish. I don’t know why Nunca triggers the imperfect subjunctive. Maybe this example could be included in the examples in this lesson? Muchas gracias, Shirley.

Nunca hubieras

Hola Shirley
The reason why it's using "nunca hubieras pensado..." is because sometimes we use the form "hubiera/hubiese" as the perfect conditional, i.e. instead of "habría..." As this seems to come from a dictation you haven't seen the translation, but it is saying:
"You would never have thought / imagined that there were some many different ways to apologise."
It's not really the use of "nunca" that has triggered it.
I hope it clarified it.
Saludos
