No puedo dar clase los lunes.

In the quiz that asks for the correct article for "lunes," why is "dar" given as the verb for teach. Why not "enseñar?"

Hola Bob M.

Good question. In Spanish, dar clase (literally “to give a class”) is the most common and natural expression for “to teach a class.” It’s an idiomatic structure widely used by teachers and learners alike.

While enseñar does mean to teach, we normally use it when referring to teaching someone something, for example:

Enseñar matemáticas
Enseñar a los estudiantes

But when talking about teaching a class on a certain day, Spanish almost always uses dar clase:

No puedo dar clase los lunes.
Mañana doy clase en la universidad.

So in this exercise, dar is used because it reflects the standard and most idiomatic way to express “to teach a class” in Spanish.

Saludos

Silvia
