La familia es/está?

La familia es/está?

I wrote "La familia está" since it seems to discuss a relationship. The correct answer is given as "La familia es". So, "es" seems to be a strong opinion. Couldn't both be correct?

Also, the issue with my answer doesn't really relate to plural versus singular ("es" vs "está").

Hola Vince

I'm not sure what you mean when you say we need to use estar to discuss a relationship, but here in this sentence:

La familia es más importante que los amigos.

Family is more important than friends.

what we are doing is using a descriptive adjective to the noun familia, therefore we use "ser". There is nothing indicating that it is a temporary adjective or a result of something (that would normally trigger estar).

It would pretty much fall into this context. Have a look at this lesson about ser here

I hope this clarified it.

Saludos
