Hola Stuart,

In Spain the word "huis" is consider monosyllabic because u+i form a diphthong  and are part of the same syllable. As a monosyllabic word it shouldn't have an accent. However it is also permitted to write it with the accent when in terms of pronunciation, it sounds as a disyllabic word. This is the case in Spain and other Hispanic countries, therefore both huis and huís are correct.

Saludos

I'm still a bit confused about where huís is used. Is it used in specific regions of Spain? In specific social classes in Spain? In specific towns or villages in Spain? In specific contexts in Spain? What other countries or regions outside of Spain use huís as a bisyllabic word? Is it widespread or more-or-less negligible, even though not incorrect? To be specific, living in Toledo Spain, should I aim for one syllable or two syllables, huis or huís? If I am traveling to Chile, should I use huis or huís? Thanks so much !
