This is because gustar works differently from the English verb to like.

In Spanish, the thing that is liked is actually the subject of the sentence and the person who likes it is expressed with an indirect object pronoun.

So:

Here, el jardín is singular, so the verb must also be singular: gusta.

Gusto is the first person singular form of the verb (yo gusto), meaning I please or I am pleasing, which is not the meaning you want in this sentence. For example:

So the correct sentence is Me gusta el jardín, because the verb agrees with el jardín, not with me.
