En mi primer matrimonio fui muy infeliz

En mi primer matrimonio fui muy infeliz

Hola Inma,

I would have thought that estar would be used here rather than ser. On reflection I imagine that ser was used because the emphasis is on the first marriage, rather than the emotional state of the person talking.

Is that the case or ....?

Saludos

Hola John,

The use of ser here with the adjective "infeliz" even when referring to a transitory state (which is when we use estar) is to do with adjectives "feliz/infeliz". We tend to use it with ser. It is not incorrect to use estar but it is more commonly used with ser:

Soy muy feliz en mi nuevo trabajo.

Estoy muy feliz en mi nuevo trabajo.

With its synonym "contento/descontento" however we don't use ser; we always use it with estar:

Soy contento en mi nuevo trabajo.

Estoy contento en mi nuevo trabajo.

Saludos

Inma
