después de que

Hola

In relation to "después de que", I have questions:

(1) why "hallase" (instead of "se halla") is used in this sentence:

"...es el final de un camino [...] después de que la Guardia Civil hallase en la 'tablet' de la víctima un enigmático mensaje."

(2) what construction is this? what are the grammar rules?

Muchas gracias.

Hola Inb

Very interesting question and something that might confuse more than one...

In this sentence: "... después de que la Guardia Civil hallase en la tablet de la víctima un enigmático mensaje" what they are using is the verb "hallar" in the imperfect subjunctive form ( hallara / hallase) - that "se" can get confused with a reflexive "se", but it's not, it is simply the ending for the imperfect subjunctive. Have a look at this lesson about forming the imperfect subjunctive for all verbs and check out the two sets of endings we have to do this.

Un saludo cordial
