¿Desde cuándo no ves a tu padre? - response: Desde pequeño. Why not: Desde era pequeño?

This is from an example in a lesson. the response given is: Desde pequeño. That seems incomplete to me. Would it be correct to say: Desde era pequeño.

It does look incomplete, but it's correct. We often say it this way as a set expression ("since little"): Desde pequeño / Desde pequeña, however you can also say the whole phrase including the verb: Desde que era pequeño / Desde que era pequeña.

(notice the "que" that you can't omit)
