The sentence from the writing exercise is:

Me despierto a las siete de la mañana.

I wake up at seven in the morning.

In this case it's always "de la mañana", at least in European Spanish. So, this is when you are specifying whether it is AM or PM. It could be "las siete de la mañana" or "las siete de la tarde".
