Conditional + subj?

Conditional + subj?

All these verbs are present tense + present subjunctive. Can I use the same construction with the conditional, in those cases where we are “softening” a request?

Such as: “Yo prefería que regreses más pronto.”

Or does that need a different structure? Thank you!

Hola A,

the natural verb sequence would be:

Main clause in the conditional + que clause in the Imperfect subjunctive.

For example:

Preferiría que regresaras pronto.

Me gustaría que vinieses conmigo.

Estaría bien que nos fuéramos de vacaciones.

Using the present subjunctive after the conditional would sound slightly odd: "preferiría que regreses pronto" but you may hear it sometimes in spoken Spanish.

Saludos
