Comprender o entender?

Comprender o entender?

To translate 'understand a contract' you suggest 'comprender un contrato'

I was confused so consulted AI which said...

Gracias

Hola David L.

The distinction you found is interesting, but in real usage the difference between entender and comprender is often much less strict than AI explanations suggest.

Both verbs can mean “to understand”, and in many contexts they are interchangeable. However, comprender can sometimes sound slightly deeper or more thorough, while entender is often more neutral and common in everyday speech.

In the context of a contract, comprender un contrato sounds perfectly natural because it implies fully grasping the meaning and implications of the document. That said, entender un contrato would also be completely correct and natural Spanish.

So your intuition is understandable, but the original wording is not wrong. In this case:

  • comprender un contrato = fully understand/grasp a contract

  • entender un contrato = understand a contract

Both work well here.

Hasta pronto

Silvia
