Calentar or Cálido

For the question - Este abrigo ________ un montón ¡Es estupendo para el invierno en la montaña! This coat is really warm. It's great for winter in the mountains!

I am wondering why a verb would be used to describe the coat? I thought an adjective like cálido would be used as a description of the coat being warm.

Hola Mollie

What we are using in this sentence is the verb "calentar" (to warm up), which is irregular in the present: caliento, calientas, calienta, calentamos, calentáis, calientan.

The structure of the sentence in Spanish is different to the equivalent sentence in English. "Este abrigo calienta un montón." is literally "This coat warms up a lot." but as this is not a natural translation in English, we used "This coat is really warm." instead. I think that is what might be confusing you.

I hope this clarified it.

Saludos

Inma
