Using aún no/todavía no with the pluperfect in Spanish (El Pretérito Pluscuamperfecto)

Learn how to say that something had not yet happened in Spanish

We use El Pretérito Pluscuamperfecto with the expressions aún no and todavía no to express that something had not yet happened.

Read and listen to these examples:

Aún no había llegado a casa cuando llamaste por teléfono.I hadn't arrived home yet when you called.

Aún no te habías casado cuando te quedaste embarazada. You were not married yet when you got pregnant.

Todavía no habíamos comido cuando empezó la tormenta. We hadn't yet eaten when the storm started.

Todavía no habían llegado las facturas cuando Miguel se enfadó con nosotros. The bills hadn't yet arrived when Miguel got upset with us.
Todavía/Aún + no + verb + cuando...

Note that in the examples above, the second clause introduced by cuando is followed by a verb in El Pretérito Indefinido. This is a very common combination of tenses in Spanish.

Bear in mind that we can also place aún and todavía after the verb, like this:

No habían llegado todavía las facturas cuando Miguel se enfadó con nosotros. The bills hadn't arrived yet when Miguel got upset with us.

No te habías casado aún cuando te quedaste embarazada. You were not married yet when you got pregnant.

No + verb + aún/todavía cuando...

Be careful not to place aún or todavía between haber and the participle. This would be incorrect:

"No había todavía terminado de estudiar..."

"Había aún no terminado de estudiar..."

I hadn't yet finished studying..."

I hadn't finished studying yet..."

In English the use of yet is a bit more flexible in terms of placement.
