you translate "hoja" as "paper". I gather this is meant to be a sheet of paper rather than the daily printed publication like "El Mundo"?

Exactly. In this sentence: Vosotras metisteis las hojas en el cajón, hojas means sheets of paper. (You put the sheets of paper in the drawer.) Paper as in newspaper would be "periódico".
