There are sometimes little nuances between saber and conocer. Both of them can be used. In this sentence for example, talking about "an area of study", la historia de Perú in this case, if we use "conocer" this refers to "being familiar with" while if we had used "saber" this would have implied "having learned about it and having acquired that knowledge." Here is another example where both could be used but conveying slightly different meanings:
- ¿Conoces el alfabeto griego?
¿Do you know the Greek alphabet? --> (Are you familiar with it?)
- ¿(Te) sabes el alphabeto griego?
¿Do you know the Greek alphabet? --> (Have you learned it?)
