SER. “We were best friends in high school.”
In general, you can tell which verb is being used by looking at the next word or two. If it is fuimos+(a relaionship), then the verb is SER. If it is fuimos+(to/from a place), as in “fuimos a la escuela juntos”, then it is IR. And so on.
