Where are you from? Second person singular or third person singular

Why was this marked wrong?

¿De dónde ________usted? - Yo soy de Venezuela.Where are you from? - I am from Venezuela.(HINT: Use verb "to be")

I selected "eres" and it was marked as incorrect.  The correct answer is "es."  How should I have know they expected a third person answer?

Hola Kurt

The pronoun that you see in the question, "usted" gives you the clue as to use the form of the verb "es", not "eres".

usted/el/ella  --  you formal/he/she  = de donde [es]

eres -- you informal = de donde [eres]
