What has happened to the word " fire" ?
This question relates to:Spanish lesson "Conjugate stem-changing (e > ie) -er verbs in the present tense in Spanish (El Presente)"

Hola Brian
This is the sentence you are referring to:
¿Enciendes la chimenea?
(Can you light the fire in the fireplace?)
In Spanish, to say "to light the fire in the fireplace" we use a very short sentence which implies all that. That is "encender la chimenea"; it is as if we are saying literally "to light the fireplace" which in English would sound odd, but not in Spanish. This is why we don't have the word "fire" in the translation.
I hope this helped.
Saludos
Inma
