Sobre vs Debajo

Why whenever I use sobre in a sentence its followed only by 'la/el'? These examples are taken from the course I'm doing on Duolingo.

E.g. El gato esta sobre la mesa.

But if I use debajo its followed by 'de la/el'.

Mi celular esta debajo de la ropa.

Is there a reason for this?

Why does one use just 'la/el' but the other needs the 'de' to be marked correct?

Hola Noa

Some prepositions are used in a different way, some have the article and noun straight after like:

sobre la mesa, en la pared, por el campo...

and some others need "de", like:

cerca de la playa, debajo de la silla, enfrente de la farmacia, dentro del cine, detrás del mueble...

There is no logic for it, they simply work in a slightly different way.

If you think of prepositions in English you'll also find the same in some of them, for example:

opposite the pharmacy

but

in front of the pharmacy

near my house

but

close to my house

I hope this clarified it.

Saludos
