"No seré demasiado atrevida"

"No seré demasiado atrevida"

Hola,

I still struggle with the whole ser and estar rules but I cannot see why ser is used in this sentence. If it means "I am not (by nature) the kind of person who will take risks" then "ser" would fit, but that is not at all obvious from the sentence. The translation offered was "I will not be too daring" [or something like that] which to me suggests that she was adopting a cautious strategy in the game, to avoid being embarrassed. Hence a temporary / changeable state.

Can you clarify this for me please?

Thanks. John

Hola John

Your interpretation of "No seré muy atrevida" in this text is spot on. It refers to a changeable state, to a state that is to do with the moment when the action will take place. However, there are some adjectives that we don't use with "estar" when it implies this, and "atrevido/atrevida" is one of those. We either use it with ser, meaning in this case "I won't be a very daring person [then]" or we would use the verb "atreverse":

"No me atreveré a mucho" (lit: I won't dare a lot)

I hope this helps,

Saludos

el verbo  "atreverse" is not necessarily a permanent trait. One can be daring in some things but not in others. In which case I feel that "estar" is a valid option unless the intent is that to be daring is a "ser" trait. Maybe one of the instructors can clarify . . .

O.K. So, as Inma says, it's a usage rule that we have to learn through practice.
