Meaning of traer

Hola,

I'm wondering about the use of traer in some of the example sentences. I had thought it was used when the speaker was at the place where something is being brought to; otherwise we use llevar? Wouldn't we say 'Ellos llevan al perro al parque'?

Gracias,

Jess

Hola Jess

You're right, traer is used in Spanish when something is moved/taken towards the place where the speaker is. It was a bit difficult to see that with this specific example about taking/bringing the dogs to the park and it sounded more natural to use take, so I changed it to something different where the meaning of to bring is clearer.

Ellos traen el pastel a la fiesta.

They're bringing the cake to the party.

Here it's easier to "see" that the speaker is already at the party.

I hope it helps.

Saludos

Inma
