I can' t understand the use of él here: ¿Que nunca has oído hablar de él?
Sounds like referring to a male person. Why don't you use ello here, since it's about a mountain?
I've seen this stuctrure elsewhere, but still don't understand it. Can you, please, explain?

It's using "de él" because when talking about this mountain people refer to it as "el monte Gorgea", so it's masculine, therefore when they refer to it with a pronoun, the masculine is used. If we were talking about something more neutral or an idea, say for example an event happening somewhere we'd refer to it as "eso/ello".
