Le vs lo

Me explicó su ________pero no le creí. She explained her reason but I didn't believe her. Hola, is the use of le because of leísmo? If so would lo be used in South America? Muchas gracias, Shirley.

I changed that to "no la creí" because, yes, it is leísmo, that happens more often in some parts of Spain and a lot less in Latin America. But this is a case of leísmo which isn't really accepted - if it was refering to "believe him" (masculine singular) then that is accepted.
