What is the rule regarding seasons of the year. When do we use the definite article el and when not. En el invierno/en invierno.

We tend to use it with no definite article:

En invierno voy a esquiar.
Generalmente voy a la playa en verano.

Using the article wouldn't be incorrect but more unusual. 

Bear in mind though that when the season is the subject of the sentence, it does need the article.

Me gusta el verano, porque me encanta ir a la playa.
La primavera es mi estación favorita.
