Duro vs dura

can you explain why, even though we're talking about a female, we would say "trabajas duro"? Gracias!

Hola Katie

This is because the word "duro" is an adverb (You work hard) , so it doesn't change for masculine or feminine.

It may be misleading because some adberbs have the same form as the masculine singular adjective form, like this one. You'd never say "Trabajas dura" to a lady. That's incorrect.

Saludos

As Inma has said  "duro" is an adverb. An Adverb is added to a verb to give more detail to how someting is being done and is not related to the person(s) or thing(s). Spanish Verbs are neutral, they don't have a gender so they take on a masculine singular form.

Yo trabajo duro. = I work hard.

Él / Ella trabaja duro. = He / She works hard.

Ellos / Ellas trabajan duro. = They work hard.

When "duro" works as an adjective it describes the person(s) or thing(s) and has to agree in gender and in singular and plural forms.

La silla es dura. = The chair is hard.

Las sillas son duras.= The chairs are hard.

El queso es duro. = The cheese is hard.
