Do we ever use “Las”?

Do we ever use “Las”?

This might be a sensitive question, but if the García family consists of a widowed mother and three daughters, would we say “Las García” or would we still consider the father to be a part of the family in a legacy sesnse?  How about in the case of divorce?  Thanks.

Hola Marcos

Interesting question! In Spanish, when referring to a family by their surname, we normally use the plural masculine article.

This is the standard form and it is used regardless of the actual gender composition of the family. Even if the family members are all women (for example, a mother and daughters), Spanish still tends to use los + surname as the generic plural.

For this reason, las García” would sound unusual in most contexts. It might occasionally appear if someone deliberately wants to emphasize that the group is entirely female, but this is not the common or neutral way to refer to a family.

The same principle generally applies in cases such as widowhood or divorce. The expression los García refers to the family unit associated with that surname, not necessarily to the presence of the father.

So in most situations, Spanish speakers would still say los García, even if the family group is made up only of women.

Un saludo

Silvia
